Reuters reported on January 21 that the Thai government imposed a 60-day state of emergency in Bangkok and neighboring provinces from January 22 to contain the opposition protest movement that has blockaded many areas in the capital to pressure caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to resign.

After the cabinet meeting on the same day, Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Visarn Techateerawat announced the above state of emergency order.
