According to Tech Insider, computer keyboards are much dirtier than many people think. In many studies on computer keyboards, scientists have found traces of Staphylococcus aureus (staph), Pseudomonas (the most common bacteria causing infections in hospitalized patients), and E.coli (bacteria that cause food poisoning).
In an analysis of 33 computer keyboards in an office in London, England, four keyboards contained a variety of potentially harmful bacteria. One of the four keyboards had five times more bacteria than a toilet seat in the same office.
Researchers say the reason is that employees eat at their desks. Food scraps fall into the gaps, becoming food for bacteria to grow. Users also contaminate keyboards when they don’t wash their hands after using the restroom.
But this isn't just the case with office keyboards. Another study found two patients infected with the same strain of staph on several hospital keyboards.
To clean the computer keyboard, the user needs to remove it from the computer and gently wipe it with a cotton cloth with a disinfectant.
