Salted egg croissants originating from Singapore cause a fever

October 23, 2016 11:10

The famous cake originating from Singapore is becoming a favorite dish in Ho Chi Minh City and creating an attractive business opportunity.

At a bakery on the B2 floor of Takashimaya - Saigon Centre, from 11am to 2pm, a long line of people queues up to buy salted egg croissants. The palm-sized croissants, filled with liquid salted egg, are taken out of the oven and put into plastic boxes. Each person can only buy a box of 5 for 60,000 VND.

According to the staff at this store, the cake was officially sold in Vietnam on October 1st after a trial period. Even during the trial period, many customers came to wait during the scheduled time but still could not buy it.

Salted egg croissants are attracting cake lovers.

In Singapore, this cake has also become a trend in the summer of 2016 and is enthusiastically sought after by young people here, lining up in long lines to buy the cake. The attraction of this new cake reminds us of recent snack trends in Vietnam such as mango shake, salt and chili grilled bread, salted egg sponge cake, Korean spicy rice cake... This cake is said to be inspired by Hong Kong's Chau Kee and kim sa buns in restaurants.

Trang, an office worker at Saigon Centre, said the reason for lining up to buy the cake: "I had the chance to try this cake in Singapore and really liked the taste of the salted egg filling, fragrant and fatty, and I didn't get tired of eating it."

Catching the new trend, many young people have made salted egg croissants at home and sold them on social networks. A box of salted egg croissants sold online has four to five cakes but is bigger than the ones in stores and costs an average of 100,000 VND per box, not including shipping costs.

Owning an online store specializing in imported goods, Tam Anh decided to sell salted egg croissants because he saw the market demand. Tam Anh said that at first, he just wanted to try making this cake at home. Then, when he received positive comments from relatives, he started selling it to the public.

"I receive four or five orders for salted egg croissants a day. From now until the end of the year when this dish becomes popular, there will probably be more orders," Tam Anh said.

Some bakeries and small cafes have also started selling salted egg croissants since early October, with prices ranging from 17,000 to 25,000 VND each. However, this dish must be eaten hot, so customers must come to the shop within a certain time frame to enjoy the croissants.

Mr. Dung, owner of Tiny Cake, said that croissants have always had sweet fillings. For those who don’t like sweets, savory croissants are a good idea, and they sell well abroad, showing great demand, so he decided to experiment.

“In early October, the shop made this cake that was not suitable for customers’ taste, so we had to make a loss. Now I have come up with a recipe to make the cake more suitable for customers’ taste and attract more customers,” said Mr. Dung.
