Following the victory of incumbent Czech President Milos Zeman over his opponent Jiri Drahos in the second round of the presidential election held on January 26-27, the Czech press has commented on Mr. Zeman's political views in the next term.
A VNA reporter in Prague quoted an analysis by Czech Radio stating that in his final presidential term as stipulated by the Czech Constitution, President Zeman will have certain changes in his political views because he is no longer under great pressure from votes and the satisfaction of the majority.
Regarding relations with Europe, during the election campaign, President Zeman criticized the centralization of the European Union (EU) leadership and opposed the immediate adoption of the euro, like the vast majority of Czechs.
He also supported Croatia's entry into the EU, even suggesting that in the future both Serbia and Russia could also become EU members.
Mr Zeman also strongly criticized the refugee quotas allocated by the EU.
Before his re-election, President Zeman was considered to have an “East-oriented” view, wanting to get closer to Russia and China.
According to the official vote count, after the second round of presidential elections held on January 26-27, Mr. Zeman won with 51.95% of the votes, only 2.73% higher than his opponent, former President of the Academy of Sciences Jiri Drahos, who received 48.04%./.
