The Global Times quoted the New York Times (USA) as saying that this is one of the biggest environmental disasters in Vietnam, the incident has caused public outrage. The majority of Vietnamese people agree with the handling of the waste-dumping business.
Many people believe that the government is doing the right thing and hope that the fine can help treat the environment and improve the lives of affected households.
According to the Reference News newspaper, Vietnam mobilized over 100 leading experts and scientists from 30 domestic and foreign agencies to collect and analyze data, followed by independent review by international experts.
Up to now, the results have been announced to determine that there is a large source of waste originating from the Vung Ang area, Ha Tinh province, containing toxins such as phenol, cyanide... combined with iron hydroxide, forming a mixed complex (Mixel). This compound has a higher density than seawater, following the ocean currents moving in the North-South direction from Ha Tinh to Thua Thien-Hue, this is the cause of mass deaths of fish and marine life, especially at the bottom.
The Chinese Ministry of Commerce website quoted Minister and Head of the Government Office Mai Tien Dung as saying that Formosa Ha Tinh officially admitted responsibility for causing the environmental incident that killed a large number of fish, and made five commitments, notably a public apology; compensation for economic losses and support for job conversion for local people; compensation for pollution treatment and restoration of the marine environment in four central provinces with a total amount of over VND11,500 billion (USD500 million); and commitment to thoroughly overcome existing shortcomings and limitations of the waste treatment system to prevent the recurrence of environmental incidents like the one that occurred.
Taiwanese media reported on the night of June 30 that the incident occurred during the early stages of the project, due to negligence by contractors. Formosa Ha Tinh plant respects the investigation results, and in addition to apologizing to the Vietnamese government and people, will show its greatest sincerity to the Vietnamese fishermen who were affected.
The fine of 500 million USD will be sent to the Vietnamese Government in stages, after which the Vietnamese Government will plan to provide relief to affected families./.
