Secure your personal electronic devices with… your heart
Scientists at the University of Buffalo, USA, have researched and developed a new security system for computers, in which users log into their computers by scanning their own hearts.

The system uses a low-level Doppler radar scanner to measure the size of a user's heart and then continues to monitor cardiac activity to ensure that no one else can log in and use their computer, the Times of India reported.
Professor Wenyao Xu at the University of Buffalo, a member of the research team, said that the power of the system's scanner is only about 5 milliwatts, much lower (less than 1%) than the waves emitted by smartphones, so it does not pose any threat to human health. According to Mr. Xu, this system is a safe and promising alternative to passwords or other biometric formats.
The new identification system uses the shape, size and function of the heart to identify users. Professor Xu said it takes about eight seconds for the system to scan and record the parameters of a heart for the first time. According to Professor Xu, human hearts do not change shape unless they are infected with some dangerous heart disease and “there is no such thing as two different hearts being exactly the same”.
Biometric systems based on cardiac parameters have been used for nearly a decade, but mainly electrodes to measure the electrocardiogram. However, no one has used devices from a distance to record cardiac parameters for identification.
According to Professor Xu, the new system has some advantages over fingerprint or iris scanning, such as: It does not cause users to feel inconvenienced every time they log into the computer, users do not need to remember to "log out" anymore because this system continuously monitors the user and will not work if another person intervenes.
Xu's team said they are working on miniaturizing the new system and installing it on the corners of computer keyboards and mobile phone applications. At airports, the system could identify a person from a distance of up to 30 meters.
