In June 2005, former Vietnamese Prime Minister Phan Van Khai made a historic visit to the United States to promote bilateral relations. The week-long visit by the former Prime Minister marked the 10th anniversary of the establishment of relations between the United States and Vietnam.

This is also the first official visit to the US by the head of the Vietnamese government after 30 years of the end of the war.

During this visit, former Prime Minister Phan Van Khai held talks with President George W. Bush at the White House. The two leaders overcame obstacles of cultural differences and war consequences to promote bilateral relations.
