Nghe An Newspaper won 2 National Press Awards for Disaster Prevention

(Baonghean.vn) - On the morning of May 26, the 2nd National Press Awards Ceremony on Natural Disaster Prevention took place in Hanoi. Nghe An Newspaper was honored to have 2 winning works.

Attending the award ceremony were comrade Le Minh Hoan - Member of the Party Central Committee, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development; Representative of the National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control; Leaders of the Ministry of Information and Communications; Vietnam Journalists Association; United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

Second National Press Award on Disaster Prevention and Controlwith the theme "For a safe society against natural disasters - Proactively adapting to climate change" was launched on October 13, 2020, on the occasion of the International Day for Disaster Reduction and ASEAN Day for Disaster Management. Following the success of the first Award, this award received the active participation of news agencies and a team of journalists, reporters, and editors from central and local press agencies.

By the time of the closing date for entries (December 31, 2021), the Organizing Committee had received a total of 918 entries in 5 types of journalism (including 302 print publications; 252 online publications; 73 television publications; 39 radio publications; 252 press photos) from 300 authors who are journalists, reporters, and collaborators from nearly 100 press agencies from central to local levels.

After a period of judging, the Organizing Committee, through the Jury consisting of prestigious journalists in national press awards, selected 04 works to win First Prize, 05 works to win Second Prize, 10 works to win Third Prize and 01 press agency with the most entries; 15 works to win Encouragement Prize, 01 work to win "Most Impactful Story" and 02 Companion Prizes for units with many contributions to disaster prevention and control.

Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Hoang Hiep - Deputy Head of the National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, Head of the Organizing Committee of the Award said: “Most of the entries this time reflect a realistic, intuitive perspective on the current status, impacts, developments of natural disasters as well as community participation; clarify and help identify limitations and challenges in natural disaster prevention and control. Not only that, the entries also help suggest and propose new solutions and measures to improve the effectiveness of natural disaster prevention and control for specialized agencies at the central and local levels.

Compared to the first Award, the number of works in this Award is greater, the works are also invested more carefully, and are of better quality. Many articles, reports in many installments, many parts have reflected honestly and objectively...".

“The media plays a vital role in preventing, responding to and recovering from natural disasters. Firstly, it raises awareness and promotes community participation. Secondly, it can help people understand and know how to prevent natural disasters and climate change. Thirdly, it can help scientists and policy makers share information about climate change. The media’s continued dedication to raising awareness and disseminating information related to natural disasters is crucial as we work together to rapidly adapt to climate change, reduce disaster risks and build a sustainable future, a disaster-safe society in Viet Nam, so that no one is left behind,” said Ms. Caitlin Wiesen, UNDP Resident Representative in Viet Nam.

Nghe An Newspaper is honored to have 2 award-winning works, including the work"Staying up all night to put out the fire and save the burning pine forest in Nghe An"by author Ngo Quang An won third prize and the work "Long-term solution to limit damage caused by landslides" by a group of authors Bui Cong Kien and Nguyen Tien Hung won an Encouragement prize.
