Elephants resort to 'drastic' measures to scratch their butts.

There is perhaps nothing more annoying and frustrating than an itch that you can't scratch and looking at the pictures below that seems to be true for elephants.

Unable to stretch its trunk far enough to reach an itchy spot, an elephant had to resort to a 'desperate' measure when the itch was located right on its... butt.

Hilarious images show an elephant sitting on a termite mound to rub an itch.

Perhaps this was not the best choice, but luckily the elephant was not attacked by the termites in return.

These funny photos were captured by photographer Usha Harish while he was working on elephants in Kenya's Amboseli National Park.

The trunk is not long enough for the elephant to scratch itself.

“These were completely unexpected and unplanned photos,” said Usha, 36.

“At that time, the herd of elephants was resting in the bushes after drinking enough water in the swamp and basking in the sun all day. They crossed the trail near where our car was parked, and suddenly stopped for a moment.”

“There was a small termite mound nearby and suddenly I saw a clever female elephant 'taking advantage' of the termite mound to scratch her itch.”

Whether desperate or creative, elephants 'rely' on termite mounds to scratch their itches.

Other elephants saw this and were curious and followed suit, creating a funny and humorous scene that perhaps no one had ever witnessed before, including those who specialize in studying the habits of this large animal.

Photographer Usha shared: “The elephants’ behavior is so cute. I have captured many funny moments of different animals and I would love to continue to witness similar behaviors.”
