Suspect arrested for threatening and demanding a man transfer 10 billion VND.
The suspect, Nguyen Dang Nam, confessed that due to jealousy and suspicion that his wife was having an illicit affair with Mr. T., he conceived the idea of extorting property from him.
On September 25th, the Thanh Tri District Police (Hanoi) announced that they have initiated a criminal case.initiate criminal proceedings against the suspect.and arrested Nguyen Dang Nam (born in 1998), residing in Hoai Duc district, Hanoi, on charges of extortion.
The police determined that in July 2024, the victim, NVT (from Hanoi), received a call from a stranger. The caller introduced himself as the husband of a woman T. knew from work. The conversation revolved around the caller's suspicion that T. was having an illicit affair with his wife.
Despite Mr. T's explanations and the perpetrator's inability to provide evidence proving Mr. T's romantic relationship with his wife, Mr. T was continuously harassed both physically and mentally in the following days. The situation escalated when the perpetrator made threatening phone calls demanding money from Mr. T to keep quiet.
Fearing for his family's happiness, personal honor, and current job, Mr. T. was forced to comply with the perpetrator's demands. On August 19th, Mr. T. transferred 200 million VND to the perpetrator.
However, after receiving the money, the perpetrator continued to demand that Mr. T. record a video of his and his wife's daily life and send it to the perpetrator. The perpetrator intended to use this video to blackmail the victim.
Because the demands were unreasonable, Mr. T refused, so the perpetrator demanded that he transfer 10 billion VND, otherwise they would publicly expose the matter. Outraged by the perpetrator's behavior, Mr. T reported the incident to the police.
Through investigative measures, the police identified Nguyen Dang Nam as the person who extorted money from Mr. T. and arrested him while he was receiving 500 million VND from the victim.
