Previously, on June 14, the Drug Crime Investigation Team of Lao Cai City Police arrested a number of subjects in a drug trafficking ring. Through the investigation, the subjects confessed to buying drugs from Pham Thi Giang, residing in Binh Minh Ward.
Based on collected documents, at 3:00 p.m. on June 14, the Drug Crime Investigation Team, the Criminal Police Team and two officers from Binh Minh Police Station, including Lieutenant Doan Van Minh, arrived at Giang's residence to execute a search warrant.
The task force quickly controlled Tran Quang Tan (born in 1985, residing in Lao Cai City). Immediately after, Nguyen Tien Thanh (born in 1976), Giang and Giang's husband, came down from the attic, Thanh holding a sharp knife in his hand.

Coordinating information exchange with the police of Lai Chau and Dien Bien provinces about the identifying characteristics of the perpetrator, through professional measures, the police force discovered that Nguyen Tien Thanh had relationships with a number of drug addicts in Tam Duong district, Lai Chau province.
According to intelligence sources, when arriving at Chu Va 12 village, Son Binh commune, Tam Duong district, Lai Chau province, Thanh parked his motorbike at a farm, then contacted another addict to pick him up in a car and continued to flee in the direction of Dien Bien.
Using professional measures, the authorities identified the car carrying Thanh with license plate number 27A - 017.60 moving through Phong Tho town, Phong Tho district, Lai Chau province, and immediately deployed teams to surround and raid.
At 2:00 p.m. on June 15, the police successfully arrested Nguyen Tien Thanh in Phong Tho town, Phong Tho district, Lai Chau province; they seized a homemade sword nearly 90cm long as evidence of the crime.
