Nearly 1 ton of crayfish caught at the border on the way to Vietnam
Lao Cai Customs continuously seized 7 shipments of red-claw crayfish (crayfish) with a total weight of 945 kg on the way to the provinces for consumption.
Previously, on May 12, Lao Cai Border Gate Customs Branch, Lao Cai Customs Department coordinated with border guards to seize 300 kg of fresh shrimp of the same type, with an estimated value of about 75 million VND.
In an official dispatch issued on May 22, the General Department of Customs directed customs departments to request provincial and municipal customs departments to direct customs branches and customs control teams to coordinate with state management agencies to strengthen measures to inspect and control the import of red crayfish; promptly combat and prevent acts of illegal transportation of this item through secondary border gates, trails, and openings in border provinces.

The General Department of Customs also stated: “The General Department of Customs' strengthening of control over the import of red-claw crayfish (scientific name: Cherax quadricarinatus, also known as crayfish) is carried out in accordance with the provisions of Clause 7, Article 7 of the Law on Biodiversity, which stipulates prohibited acts regarding biodiversity, including the act of "importing and developing invasive alien species".
Red-claw crayfish is not on the list of aquatic species allowed for trade in Vietnam; according to Circular 35/2018/TT-BTNMT of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, this item is on the list of invasive alien species.
