On the morning of September 30, Tra Vinh Provincial Police received a report of a serious murder case occurring in My Thap Hamlet (My Long Bac Commune, Cau Ngang District, Tra Vinh Province). The victim was Mrs. Tran Thi So Van (59 years old, residing at the same address). Mrs. Van lived with her 17-year-old child who had been mentally disabled since childhood.

The Tra Vinh Provincial Police conducted an autopsy and found that the victim had 37 stab wounds, suspected to be from a Thai knife, including a fatal heart puncture. In addition, the victim's two earlobes were torn off, possibly because of a stolen earring. The victim died about 24 hours before the autopsy, in the early morning of September 29.

Through the investigation of the scene, the authorities discovered that the aluminum cabinet where Ms. Van slept had been broken into, and many items inside had blood stains. The Investigation Police Department of Tra Vinh Province Police determined that this was a case of murder and robbery.

Through investigation, the police discovered that on September 29, a gold shop bought a pair of earrings from a strange man and woman worth about 3 taels of 18K gold for more than 600,000 VND. Ms. Van's relatives said that the earrings belonged to the victim. Through professional measures, the police identified Tai and Nhi as the two suspects in the case.

The families of the two subjects have long since left their hometown in Chau Thanh, Tra Vinh to move to Bu Dop district, Binh Phuoc province to make a living. Through social networks, Tai and Nhi fell in love. About 2 weeks ago, Tai and Nhi invited each other to visit their hometown. On September 28, the two planned to return to Binh Phuoc but had no money. So, the couple planned to kill Ms. Van and steal her earrings for travel expenses. Both were arrested while hiding in Binh Phuoc.
