Authorities arrested a suspect for renting three self-drive cars and then pawning them.
After renting three self-drive cars in Dak Lak, Do Van Thanh pawned them to get money for his expenses.
On May 15th, the Dak Lak Provincial Police announced that they had issued a decision to prosecute and detain Do Van Thanh (30 years old, residing in Quang Phu town, Cu M'gar district) for 4 months to investigate the acts of "Fraudulent appropriation of property," "Abuse of trust to appropriate property," and "Using counterfeit seals or documents of agencies or organizations."
According to initial investigations, Thanh was acquainted with three individuals who ran self-drive car rental businesses in Buon Ma Thuot City and Cu Mgar District (Dak Lak).
In 2024, due to business losses, Thanh came up with the idea of renting a car and pawning it to get money to pay off his debts.
From March to December 2024, Thanh rented three cars from three acquaintances and then pawned them for over 500 million VND. For one of the cars, Thanh ordered a fake registration certificate in his name online to facilitate the pawning process.
After the rental period expired, the three victims repeatedly contacted Thanh to retrieve their vehicles, only to discover that he had pawned them and was unable to redeem them. These individuals then filed a complaint against Thanh with the police.
Currently, the Dak Lak Provincial Police have recovered two cars (worth 760 million VND) and are continuing to investigate and recover the remaining car.
