Half a century of serving the country
Born on November 20, 1942 in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Joseph Robinette Biden struggled with a stutter during his childhood and adolescence. Overcoming his weaknesses, he passed the entrance exam and graduated from the University of Delaware and Syracuse Law School. In 1970, Biden unexpectedly turned to politics when he joined the New Castle County Council. In 1972, Biden surprised the people of Delaware when he was elected to the US Senate - becoming the 5th youngest Senator in US history at the age of 29. Being young, inexperienced and lacking the financial resources of many of his opponents, Biden's victory was all the more impressive.

However, the joy was short-lived when tragedy struck his family. His first wife and 1-year-old daughter died in a traffic accident. His two sons, Beau and Hunter, were lucky to survive but were seriously injured. Mr. Biden then planned to resign to take care of his family but was encouraged to stay. Overcoming the pain of loss, Mr. Biden began a half-century journey of serving the United States in a new role.
From 1973 to 2007, he worked on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the House Judiciary Committee. In 2008, Mr. Biden was invited by Mr. Barack Obama to be his Vice President - running mate in the US presidential race. AfterObama was elected President, Mr. Biden served as Vice President from 2009 to 2017.
During his time as Vice President, Mr. Biden has accumulated extensive political experience and has also achieved significant results. One of the highlights is that he worked closely with Mr. Obama to build and pass the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare. After leaving the White House, Mr. Biden and his wife also launched the “Biden Cancer” Initiative to support efforts to prevent, detect, diagnose, research and care for cancer patients. During his term as Vice President, Mr. Biden also focused on addressing the challenges posed by climate change, assessing it as one of the biggest crises facing the United States.
