Young gourds in Lam river area attract tourists

(Baonghean.vn) - Gourd vegetables, including shoots, flower buds and fruits, are a food source grown on the Lam River banks without using pesticides. Gourd vegetables are harvested from the beginning of January, when other vegetable sources are out of season, so they attract more customers.

These days, twice a day, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuan in Thanh Linh commune, Thanh Chuong district is always busy with harvesting and selling all kinds of products from squash (pumpkin). Ms. Thuan said that for many years now, after the flood season, every year her family has been able to plant 5 sao on the Lam river bank - a land very suitable for squash.

Growing squash does not require spraying pesticides, and can be harvested for a long time with many types of products such as shoots, flower buds, young fruits, and mature fruits, so it is very easy to sell. Currently, each kilogram of squash shoots can be sold for 10,000 - 25,000 VND, a small squash can be sold for 5,000 VND. On average, 1 sao earns about 4 million VND.

Thanh Chuong district has Lam river flowing through more than 40 km, creating many alluvial lands that are very suitable for growing squash. Previously, squash was only grown for its fruit, so the growing area was small, but now due to the rapidly increasing demand for vegetables, hundreds of households have grown it.

According to the Thanh Chuong District Department of Agriculture, the district currently has about 500 hectares, mainly in the communes of Cat Van, Thanh Tien, Thanh Linh, Dong Van... which are localities with many soi fields. Every year, people can earn billions of dong from growing squash.
