Bayern win impressively, PSG struggle in opening match.
Last night, the German Bundesliga and the French Ligue 1 officially kicked off. The two reigning champions, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint Germain, had contrasting opening matches. While Bayern secured an impressive 3-1 victory against Borussia Monchengladbach, PSG surprisingly drew 1-1 with Montpellier.
At their home ground, Allianz Arena, Bayern Munich, with their superior strength, took a 2-0 lead after just 16 minutes thanks to two goals from midfielder Arjen Robben (12th minute) and striker Mario Mandzukic (16th minute).

The visitors pulled one back to 2-1 after an own goal by Bayern Munich defender Bonfim Dante in the 40th minute. However, in the 69th minute of the second half, defender David Alaba sealed Montpellier's victory with a goal that made it 3-1. A minute earlier, Thomas Muller had missed a penalty.
With this victory, Bayern Munich temporarily moved up to first place in the standings, while Monchengladbach dropped to 18th. This win also helped coach Pep Guardiola temporarily overcome the pressure from the press in his quest to defend the title this season.
Meanwhile, PSG had a very difficult opening match of the season against Montpellier. Despite being considered the stronger team, Montpellier's determined efforts prevented PSG's star players from performing at their best. PSG's big-money signing of the summer, Edinson Cavani, had a less than impressive debut, failing to make any impact.
In the first half, the home team Montpellier played very well and took an early lead in the 10th minute thanks to Remy Cabella. In the second half, PSG had to work hard to equalize through Maxwell in the 60th minute.

Also last night, Manchester United suffered a huge disappointment, losing 1-3 to Sevilla in a match that honored the tireless contributions of center-back Rio Ferdinand during his 11 years with the "Red Devils."

Manchester United - Sevilla: 1 - 3
Luis Antonio Valencia 65' - Victor Machin 21', Marko Marin 26', Bryan Rabello 90'
