2-month-old baby dies after parents treat cough at home
The family just thought the baby had a cold due to the cold weather so they gave him herbal cough syrup without going to the doctor.
Dr. Le Ngoc Duy, Deputy Head of the Emergency and Poison Control Department, National Children's Hospital, said that the current cold weather has caused the number of pediatric patients admitted to the emergency room to increase, but not much compared to the same period in 2016. The majority of pediatric patients admitted to the emergency room have respiratory failure, with a cautious prognosis.
Notably, nearly a month ago, the department received a case of a 2-month-old child named T. who died because her parents had treated her cough at home on their own. According to the family, T. had symptoms of fever, cough, and runny nose. The family thought the child had a cold due to the cold weather, so they gave him herbal cough syrup without going to the doctor.
After that, baby T. had difficulty breathing and stopped breastfeeding. The family panicked and took the child to the hospital, but it was too late. Doctor Duy said that when admitted to the hospital, baby T. had prolonged respiratory failure, cardiac arrest, and later died. This is a great lesson for parents.

Cold weather, little sunlight, low air temperature, bacteria and viruses have favorable conditions to develop and cause diseases in children, especially respiratory diseases.
“When your child has an upper respiratory infection, parents should not be subjective and treat it at home on their own. Because viral diseases can quickly turn into pneumonia or bronchitis, making treatment costly, long-term, and even life-threatening,” Dr. Duy warned.
Experts also recommend never sharing prescriptions or using prescriptions from previous visits for children.
