Closing of APEC Senior Officials Meeting in Nghe An

(Baonghean.vn) - After 2 days of effective work, with practical discussions and sharing, the 11th Senior Officials Conference on Disaster Management held in Nghe An closed early this afternoon, September 22.

The closing session was chaired by Mr. Tran Quang Hoai - General Director of the General Department of Natural Disaster Prevention and Control under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development; Mr. Dinh Viet Hong - Vice Chairman of Nghe An Provincial People's Committee; representatives of the economies of Papua New Guinea and Japan.

Overall, the conference completed the entire agenda as proposed, especially impressive with many concise, profound and quality presentations.

The conference heard and discussed more than 20 reports from sharing economies on developing information technology infrastructure systems and applying new technologies to cope with new normal natural disasters, including both hard and soft solutions.

In his closing speech, Director General of the General Department of Natural Disaster Prevention and Control Tran Quang Hoai highly appreciated the usefulness of the information exchanged at the conference for Vietnam in particular and economies in general.

Director General of the General Department of Natural Disaster Prevention and Control Tran Quang Hoai emphasized that APEC economies continue to learn and share initiatives with each other in disaster risk management.

Mr. Hoai reaffirmed: “The more economic activities develop, the greater the risks caused by natural disasters, especially in countries with unsynchronized development. Therefore, the work of minimizing damage caused by natural disasters requires a comprehensive plan built on the basis of using multi-dimensional information sources. Natural disaster prevention activities need to be integrated into the socio-economic development plans of all levels, sectors and localities.”

He also noted that the APEC region will continue to face challenges from natural disasters and climate change; therefore, it is necessary to acknowledge and continue to learn and share initiatives from economies, continue to convey valuable information and lessons learned, and clearly realize that only science and technology can solve major inter-regional and inter-regional issues.

Representing Nghe An province, Mr. Dinh Viet Hong - Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee expressed his joy that scientists and organizations are always interested in researching to provide advanced technological solutions for forecasting, warning, emergency response and effective recovery, and making recommendations to help leaders of economies in the Asia-Pacific region fulfill their commitments in effectively dealing with natural disasters.

“Through this Conference, the province also hopes to have more opportunities to strengthen international cooperation, learn and exchange experiences, and call for support from the international community to improve disaster risk management capacity,” the Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee emphasized.

Also at the closing session, host economy Vietnam transferred the hosting rights of the conference to 2018 host economy Papua New Guinea.
