Master - Doctor Dao Trung Hieu, Deputy Director of Children's Hospital 1, said that the patient was diagnosed with abdominal wall hernia with umbilical hernia. According to Doctor Hieu, abdominal wall hernia or umbilical hernia is not uncommon, but the condition of the child having all the intestines and bladder out is very rare.
To avoid infection of the exposed organs, the doctors reconstructed the abdominal wall to put the intestines and bladder back in the correct position. The doctors also created a urinary tract and an artificial anus so the baby could urinate and defecate. As of this morning, the baby's health is stable, the reconstructed abdominal wall is dry and shows no signs of infection.
"The genitals are still not found, so determining the baby's gender will be based on chromosomes," said Dr. Nguyen Tien Thanh, Department of General Surgery.
The baby’s mother said she had a routine prenatal check-up but did not detect any abnormalities in her baby. It was not until the baby went into premature labor at 32 weeks that the doctors announced that the baby had an abnormal abdominal cavity.
According to doctors at Children’s Hospital 1, abdominal wall hernias combined with umbilical cord hernias make children susceptible to infection. These patients often have accompanying cardiovascular and spinal diseases.
