A 16-month-old patient in Phu Tho had a high fever and cough for 3 weeks. Doctors discovered that the child was infected with the Adeno virus.

The baby was brought to the Obstetrics and Pediatrics Center, Phu Tho General Hospital at the end of April, in a state of fussiness, fever, pale skin, upper respiratory tract infection, infection, mouth ulcers, poor appetite, and dark urine.

Testing and using PCR (gene sequencing) technique, the child was diagnosed with Adeno virus infection - a type of virus that causes acute diseases with diverse symptoms.

According to Dr. Bui Thi Den, Head of the Department of Tropical Diseases, Obstetrics and Pediatrics Center, this virus is mainly transmitted through the respiratory tract, causing diseases in the upper respiratory tract such as rhinitis and lower respiratory tract such as bronchitis and pneumonia. Adeno virus can also cause patients to have conjunctivitis, acute gastroenteritis or hemorrhagic cystitis.

"The mortality rate of patients with adenovirus pneumonia is 8-10%," said Dr. Den.

Currently, there is no specific treatment for adenovirus. The main treatment regimen is symptomatic treatment, improving the patient's physical condition, possibly using antibiotics to prevent bacterial superinfection, and most importantly, maintaining good hygiene.

After two weeks of treatment, the patient's health has stabilized, he is eating well and in good spirits. He was discharged from the hospital on May 10.

Doctor Den said that adenovirus disease is transmitted both directly and indirectly in daily life. When detecting signs of cough, runny nose, fever, rhinitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, cloudy, dark urine, painful urination... relatives should go to a medical facility for immediate treatment to avoid spreading to the community.

To prevent disease, it is necessary to maintain cleanliness, do not share items such as towels, bowls, chopsticks, spoons, cups, beds, mats... Disinfect and sterilize the patient's items during the acute stage of the disease and disinfect and sterilize one last time after recovery.
