Inside the longest tunnel through the mountain in Nghe An

(Baonghean.vn) - The Than Vu Tunnel on the North-South Expressway section through Nghe An is located in an area with complex geological conditions, heavily weathered, fragmented, and interspersed rocks... This is considered the most challenging section on the Dien Chau - Bai Vot route.

This route includes the construction of the Than Vu tunnel, which runs through Than Vu mountain, with the northern part in Dien Chau district and the southern part in Nghi Loc district, Nghe An province. Photo: Tran ChauThe Than Vu Tunnel has a total length of 1.13 km and is designed as two separate tunnels, each 13.78m wide, with a distance of 45m between the centerlines. Phase 1 involves the complete construction of the right-hand branch tunnel for two-way traffic. Phase 2 will complete the entire tunnel to its full scale with 6 lanes for motor vehicles. Photo: Quang AnDue to the complex and challenging geological conditions, the relevant parties held continuous meetings and discussions throughout the construction process to find the most suitable and safest solutions. Many locations within the tunnel were equipped with displacement monitoring devices to track the structure and allow for timely intervention in case of movement or incidents. The tunnel construction workers are all highly experienced, working in three shifts and four teams to ensure the project stays on schedule. Photo: Quang AnMr. Vo Son Hai, the construction commander of the northern section of the Than Vu tunnel, said: "Construction work inside the mountain is very difficult. As we excavate the tunnel, we immediately build the steel frame. The most challenging part is when working from the two southern ends of the tunnel towards the point of closure, where we encounter a weak geological zone. If we are not careful, landslides could easily occur."
