According to the indictment, on the evening of February 8, 2017, a conflict arose between Nguyen Trung Thang (Ngoc's nephew) and Nguyen Dinh Dan, and Thang was slapped three times by Dan.
When he learned that his nephew was beaten, Nguyen Thanh Ngoc asked for Dan's phone number. The two agreed to meet at Ngoc's coffee shop to talk. When they arrived, Dan held a knife and pointed it at Ngoc, saying, "Don't you know who I am? Are you from Chua Market? I'll kill you now." Ngoc ran into the bedroom and took the gun hidden under the bed. Ngoc held the gun in front of the shop, pointed it at Dan and declared, "If anyone cuts me again, I'll shoot."
Seeing Mr. Dan holding a knife, Ngoc pulled the trigger, shooting Dan, causing the victim to die on the way to the emergency room. After committing the crime, Ngoc took the weapon to the investigation agency and surrendered.
At the trial, Nguyen Thanh Ngoc admitted his crime and asked the victim's family for forgiveness, and asked the panel of judges to consider giving him a lighter sentence so he could return to society soon.
Considering the case in its entirety, the panel sentenced Nguyen Thanh Ngoc to 9 years in prison, and ordered him to compensate the victim more than 122 million VND (minus 50 million VND previously compensated); the defendant must be responsible for providing monthly support for Mr. Dan's parents of 300,000 VND/person, and monthly support for Mr. Dan's two children of 800,000 VND/person until they turn 18 years old./.
