Measles has spread to many provinces and cities.

February 9, 2014 19:41

On February 8th, dozens of children infected with measles were receiving treatment at the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Department of the National Children's Hospital. According to Dr. Nguyen Van Lam, Deputy Head of the Infectious Diseases Department at the National Children's Hospital, the majority of the patients were from Hanoi, with the remainder from Ha Nam, Nam Dinh, Hung Yen, Ninh Binh, Phu Tho, Yen Bai, Vinh Phuc, Bac Ninh, and Hai Duong.

According to department statistics, the number of hospitalized children has increased significantly since January 2014, with over 100 cases; 41 cases were admitted in the first week of February alone. The oldest measles patient was 8 years old, and most of those infected had not been vaccinated against measles. According to Mr. Nguyen Nhat Cam, Director of the Hanoi Center for Preventive Medicine, the increase in the epidemic is due to a recent decrease in vaccination rates (94.8% compared to 98% in previous years). This is because many parents are worried about adverse events following the Quinvaxem vaccine, so they are not having their children vaccinated or have stopped vaccination altogether.

While the Ministry of Health's report indicated that only four provinces/cities had measles outbreaks: Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Lao Cai, and Yen Bai, hospital observations show that the measles epidemic is spreading, with cases appearing in many localities.
