Nghe An Trauma and Orthopedics Hospital accesses many new and advanced techniques
(Baonghean.vn) - With the desire to bring the best treatment results to patients, Nghe An Trauma and Orthopedics Hospital constantly updates and masters many modern techniques; bringing high efficiency in surgery and helping patients recover optimally.
Successfully organized a workshop on new technical approaches
On November 11, 2022, Nghe An Trauma and Orthopedics Hospital organized a workshop on "Approaching microsurgical techniques to treat plexus paralysis and new techniques in the treatment of osteoarthritis", with the experience sharing of Dr. Nguyen Cao Vien - Deputy Head of the Department of Trauma and Orthopedics, People's Hospital 115.
The workshop was attended by Dr. Nguyen Huu Le - Deputy Director of Nghe An Department of Health, along with the Board of Directors, medical staff of Nghe An Orthopedic and Trauma Hospital and representatives of medical units in the province.

At the seminar, BSCKII. Nguyen Cao Vien shared about "Brachial plexus paralysis and treatment methods", as well as knowledge about "Orthofix external fixator and some issues to note".
BSCKII. Nguyen Cao Vien said that the most common causes of brachial plexus paralysis are traffic accidents, domestic accidents, and injuries caused by weapons such as knives and scissors. Of these, brachial plexus paralysis, also known as arm paralysis, caused by traffic accidents in Vietnam accounts for a very high rate.
Brachial plexus palsy is a neurological condition that greatly affects the patient's quality of life, especially some daily functions. Brachial plexus palsy is divided into two levels, complete paralysis and incomplete paralysis. Tendon transfer surgery is performed in two cases:
The first case is late nerve paralysis, the muscle is damaged, degenerated, and cannot be transferred to restore nerve. For muscle tendon transfer, the patient is often transferred tendons to restore function; the doctor also evaluates which tendons are still there, and whether the current function of that tendon is good or not. Because when transferring tendons or muscles, the transferred muscle must reach a certain muscle strength for the transfer to be effective.
The second case is for patients who have recovered after nerve transfer. The doctor will take the recovered tendon and transfer it to the lost function, but still ensure that the patient's old function is not affected.

Also in the seminar, BSCKII. Nguyen Cao Vien also shared about the use of Orthofix Frame in the treatment of osteomyelitis. Orthofix Frame in the treatment of osteomyelitis is currently used by many countries in the world, especially developed countries. Orthofix Frame is considered more flexible, has higher accuracy than other traditional frames, is easy to use and is considered a multi-purpose frame in the treatment of trauma and orthopedic diseases.
In addition to sharing about the techniques, BSCKII. Nguyen Cao Vien directly answered questions and exchanged experiences with doctors in the seminar. Many questions related to new techniques were answered specifically, helping doctors easily apply them in practice.
Pioneer in mastering high technology in Trauma - Orthopedics
After the seminar, Dr. Nguyen Cao Vien directly examined the patient and transferred the technique: "Tendon transfer to treat complete brachial plexus paralysis" and the technique "Bone lengthening to treat osteomyelitis with Oxthofix external fixator" to doctors at Nghe An Trauma and Orthopedics Hospital.

The case of a 17-year-old male patient in Dien Chau, Nghe An, had a thigh abscess 2 years ago, leading to left femur osteomyelitis. The patient had surgery to remove the inflammation at many medical facilities, however, the inflammation did not improve. The patient was directly operated on by Dr. Nguyen Cao Vien and prescribed to clean the osteomyelitis, and place an Orthofix external fixator to reconstruct the left femur.

On the same day, Dr. Nguyen Cao Vien directly performed surgery on a male patient (34 years old), in Quynh Luu, Nghe An, who suffered trauma and paralysis of the right brachial plexus more than a year ago. The patient had undergone nerve transfer surgery at another hospital, and now has limited wrist extension and movement.
The technique of “Tendon transfer for brachial plexus palsy” is considered a major step forward in the treatment of plexus palsy. This technique has only been performed at Central level hospitals. Nghe An Traumatology and Orthopedics Hospital is the first unit in the North Central region to apply this new technique.

Nghe An Trauma and Orthopedics Hospital is also a pioneer in implementing the technique of "Bone lengthening to treat osteomyelitis with Orthofix external fixation frame" in the province.
Nghe An Trauma and Orthopedics Hospital is constantly innovating and updating advanced technologies and techniques to bring the best treatment results to patients. In the coming time, the Hospital plans to organize many scientific seminars to approach and master new techniques, improve the quality of medical examination and treatment; and minimize the rate of referrals./.
