Nghe An General Friendship Hospital performs first organ transplant from brain-dead donor
(Baonghean.vn) - On the afternoon of September 7, Nghe An General Hospital performed organ harvesting from a brain-dead donor and organ transplants for 2 patients.
On September 6, Nghe An General Hospital received a voluntary application from the donor's relatives to register to donate tissues and body parts after the donor died/was brain dead.
Immediately, Nghe An General Hospital notified the National Organ Transplant Coordination Center and other organ transplant centers nationwide. On the morning of September 7, a delegation of officials from the National Organ Transplant Coordination Center, Viet Duc Hospital in Hanoi, and Hue Central Hospital arrived in Nghe An to work, ready to receive organs from donors and transplant organs to recipients.

At 3:30 p.m. on September 7, the organ retrieval and transplantation from the donor to the recipient was officially carried out. From the donor's organs, Nghe An General Hospital performed kidney transplants for 2 patients with severe kidney failure.
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Van Huong - Party Committee Secretary, Director, Chairman of the Organ Transplant Coordination Council of Nghe An General Hospital said: The hospital has been licensed by the Ministry of Health to perform organ transplants since 2019. With the support of Viet Duc Hospital and the National Organ Transplant Coordination Center, the hospital has successfully performed many organ transplants from living donors. As for organ transplants from brain-dead donors, this is the first time the hospital has performed them.
To perform the organ transplant from a brain-dead donor, Nghe An General Hospital mobilized 6 teams of doctors to participate (preparation, consultation, coordination, organ retrieval, organ transplantation, post-operative monitoring) with a total workforce of nearly 200 people.
Nghe An's ability to perform organ transplants from deceased/brain-dead donors and living donors is extremely important, affirming the role and position of the high-tech medical center in the North Central region; helping people in the region receive multiple organ transplants without having to travel far.

According to Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Van Huong: The act of the donor's family registering to donate tissues and body parts after the donor is dead/brain dead is an act of great humanitarian significance. From the donor's body parts, many other patients will be saved.
Currently, the number of patients waiting for organ transplants in Nghe An in particular and Vietnam in general is very large. However, the source of donated organs only meets 1/20 of the demand. In Vietnam, organ donations mainly come from living donors. People are still hesitant to donate tissues and body parts after the donor dies/is brain dead due to cultural and conceptual factors./.
