Previously, Nghe An Endocrinology Hospital received many patients with diabetes and chronic kidney failure, but most of them had to be transferred to another hospital or higher level for treatment. To meet the needs of examination, treatment, continuous and prolonged dialysis and improve the quality of life for patients with kidney diseases, especially end-stage kidney failure,
The hospital has put into operation the Artificial Kidney Unit. With a system of spacious, clean patient rooms, appropriately designed beds, creating the most comfort for patients on artificial kidney dialysis. The system of modern medical equipment, artificial kidney dialysis machines (imported from Germany), water filtration systems meeting national standards, meet the needs of periodic blood filtration and treatment of chronic and acute kidney failure.
At the same time, the hospital focuses on improving the expertise of the medical team and doctors in the field of artificial kidney; sending 2 doctors and technicians to receive specialized training at Bach Mai Hospital. Together with the team of doctors and nurses of the Emergency Resuscitation Department who are well-trained, they actively support the Artificial Kidney Unit. The hospital's Artificial Kidney Unit has received technology transfer from Bach Mai Hospital (Hanoi).
Up to now, after 3 months of operation, the Artificial Kidney Unit receives dozens of patients every day, performing 3-4 consecutive shifts. Since the establishment of the Hospital's Artificial Kidney Unit, it has not only improved the effectiveness of treating patients with diabetes complications; but also created favorable conditions for patients in examining and treating kidney diseases.
Mr. Vu Xuan Niem (Block 12, Quang Trung Ward, Vinh City) has had diabetes for many years, now has many serious complications, especially end-stage kidney failure; was transferred from a lower-level hospital to the Endocrinology Hospital for treatment and periodic dialysis for two months now. Every three weeks, his family takes him to the hospital's Dialysis Unit for dialysis. Mr. Niem shared: "I have had diabetes for many years, since I had kidney failure complications, my health has declined significantly. But thanks to the dedicated treatment of the doctors at the Endocrinology Hospital, and dialysis at the Intensive Care Unit, my condition has improved. With the Artificial Kidney Unit at the department, patients can conveniently treat diabetes while undergoing dialysis, because poor patients like us cannot afford to go to higher-level hospitals for treatment."

The establishment of the Artificial Kidney Unit at the Endocrinology Hospital creates conditions for patients to access new techniques, improving the effectiveness of kidney failure treatment. Patients with kidney disease often have to undergo long-term treatment. For patients with end-stage chronic kidney failure, they often have to undergo dialysis (2-3 times a week) and have to "stick" with the hospital for life. Therefore, the Artificial Kidney Unit at the Endocrinology Hospital not only greatly supports them in treating the disease, but also saves treatment costs (no longer having to go through the trouble of transferring to a higher level for treatment).
Discussing the development orientation of the hospital's Artificial Kidney Unit, Doctor Nguyen Van Hoan - Director of Nghe An Endocrinology Hospital said: Currently, the number of patients with kidney diseases tends to increase rapidly. According to statistics from the world and Vietnam, among the causes of artificial kidney failure, the cause due to complications of diabetes accounts for 40 - 44%. Therefore, in the near future, the Endocrinology Hospital will establish a Nephrology - Urology Department, and has sent 2 doctors for postgraduate training (CK1 and Master) in this field, in order to meet the increasing demand for medical examination and treatment of patients.
