A large uterine fibroid (equivalent to a 4-month pregnancy) was successfully removed by doctors at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital using a modern laparoscopic surgical method, employing a Morcellator – a device that helps break down the tumor into smaller pieces for removal without the need for open surgery.

Patient NTHN (24 years old, residing in Dien Chau commune) was admitted to the hospital with symptoms of an abnormally enlarged abdomen, accompanied by fatigue and dull lower abdominal pain for several months. The pain gradually increased over time.

The patient shared: She had discovered she had uterine fibroids three years ago, but due to negligence, she hadn't received complete treatment. Recently, when the symptoms became severe and affected her daily life, she decided to be hospitalized.

At the Gynecology Department, after examination and necessary paraclinical tests, the doctors diagnosed the patient with a mass.fibroidsIt was very large, measuring up to 140 x 145 x 86 mm, equivalent to the uterus of a 4-month-old fetus. This tumor had compressed the ureter, leading to persistent fatigue and abdominal pain for the patient.

After consultation, the patient was scheduled for laparoscopic myomectomy. Notably, the surgery was performed with the assistance of a Morcellator – a specialized instrument that helps to break the tumor into many small pieces right in the abdominal cavity. With the help of this device, the doctors completely removed the "giant" tumor through very small incisions in the abdominal wall without having to open the abdomen, minimizing invasiveness.

After more than an hour of surgery, a uterine fibroid weighing approximately 1,200 grams was removed. With only very small laparoscopic surgical scars ranging from 5 mm to 10 mm, the uterus returned to its normal size... After the surgery, the patient's health was stable and she recovered well. She was able to walk one day post-surgery and no complications occurred. The abdominal pain completely disappeared.

According to Master's degree holder and doctor Nguyen Huu Hoai, Deputy Head of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department: Laparoscopic surgery combined with the Morcellator machine has become a routine technique at the clinic.Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics HospitalAfter removal, the tumor is placed in a specialized bag inside the patient's abdomen and ground into small pieces using a modern Morcellator machine, ensuring that no tumor fragments are left in the abdominal cavity after removal.

This method helps remove fibroids while preserving the uterus. The surgery is quick; minimizes the risk of blood loss, infection, and other postoperative complications; is aesthetically pleasing; and patients recover quickly after surgery.

According to domestic medical literature and reports, very few medical facilities are capable of performing laparoscopic surgery on large fibroids like patient N's. Most similar cases are indicated for open surgery, as laparoscopic surgery requires high skill and is often difficult due to limited surgical space.
