The patient was treated with high-dose tetanus antitoxin, anticonvulsants, intravenous fluids, and high-dose antibiotics.
"Today, after 14 days, we can confirm that this case has been successfully saved. The doctor has started to reduce the dosage of the medicine, and the patient can eat and breastfeed normally," said Dr. Son, Head of the Infectious Diseases Department. The victim will be treated for a few more weeks before being discharged from the hospital.
Also according to Mr. Nguyen Van Son, Head of the Infectious Diseases Department, two months ago in this department, baby Lau Y Ho (6 days old) residing in Ky Son district, Nghe An also had tetanus all over his body. The cause was determined to be that at birth, relatives used a bamboo stick to cut baby Ho's umbilical cord, leading to the baby being infected with neonatal tetanus.
Baby Ho was admitted to the hospital after 6 days of incubation and was in critical condition but was saved by the infectious disease doctor. Currently, the baby has been discharged from the hospital and is in good health, without any sequelae," said Mr. Son, Head of the infectious disease department. He also recommended that everyone, especially parents, should vaccinate their children when they have an accident to avoid tetanus.
Tetanus is a disease that causes stiffening of the muscles in the body, often fatal. It is caused by a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium tetani, which is released through a wound in the skin. Symptoms include numbness of the tongue and jaw, followed by stiffness of the whole body, and when the muscles of the chest become stiff, breathing becomes difficult, and death occurs. |
