(Baonghean.vn) - On the morning of October 23, Mr. Nguyen Van Son, head of the infectious diseases department of Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, said that Tran Thi Hai Yen (22 months old, residing in Nghi Thai commune, Nghi Loc district, Nghe An) with generalized tetanus has been confirmed to be saved and her health is improving.

The doctor said that 14 days ago, Tran Thi Hai Yen was admitted to the hospital with convulsions and jaw stiffness. After an emergency examination and consultation, the doctor determined that the victim had suffered from tetanus for 7 days. This was because the patient had stepped on a piece of ceramic on her left foot.

The patient was treated with high-dose anti-tetanus serum, anticonvulsants, intravenous fluids, and high-dose antibiotics.

"Today, after 14 days, it can be confirmed that this case has been successfully saved. The doctor has started to reduce the dosage of the medicine, and the patient can eat and breastfeed normally," said Dr. Son, Head of the Infectious Diseases Department. The victim will be treated for a few more weeks and will be discharged from the hospital.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Son, Head of the Infectious Diseases Department, two months ago, in the same department, baby Lau Y Ho (6 days old) residing in Ky Son district, Nghe An also suffered from tetanus all over his body. The cause was determined to be that at birth, relatives used a bamboo stick to cut baby Ho's umbilical cord, leading to the baby being infected with neonatal tetanus.

Baby Ho was hospitalized after 6 days of incubation and was in critical condition but was saved by the infectious disease doctor. Currently, the baby has been discharged from the hospital and is in good health, without any sequelae," said Mr. Son, Head of the infectious disease department. He also recommended that everyone, especially parents, should vaccinate their children when they have an accident to avoid tetanus.

Tetanus is a disease that causes stiffening of the muscles in the body, often fatal. It is caused by a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium tetani through a wound in the skin. Symptoms include numbness of the tongue and jaw, followed by stiffness of the whole body, and difficulty breathing when the muscles of the chest become stiff, leading to death.
