(Baonghean.vn) - Recently, the Intensive Care and Anti-Poisoning Department - Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital has just saved the life of a patient with MIS-C syndrome (multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children associated with COVID-19). This disease is rare but very dangerous to the child's life.

The patient is NKN (8 years old, residing in Nam Dan district), transferred to Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital for emergency treatment on March 16. The family said: NKN was infected withCOVID-194 weeks ago. I only had mild symptoms, self-monitored and treated at home.

Five days before being admitted to the hospital, NKN had a persistent high fever that was difficult to reduce. Her family took her to a local hospital for treatment, but her condition did not improve... On the fifth day, the child had difficulty breathing, so she was transferred to Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital for further treatment.

Upon admission to the hospital, the child had a persistent high fever of over 39°C, irritability, a rash all over the body, severe itching, red conjunctiva, difficulty breathing, chest pain, and very high inflammation indicators (procalcitonin 4.495 ng/mL, quantitative CRP 253.8 mg/L). Test results showed a blood clotting disorder, impaired heart function, and continuously low SpO2...

With the clinical symptoms of N when admitted to the hospital, doctors at Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital thought of three possibilities: blood infection, Kawasaki disease and MIS-C syndrome. All three of these diseases are dangerous and can threaten the patient's life.

However, from epidemiological factors combined with research, updating international documents and scientific reports of the National Children's Hospital and combining the Troponin I test 32.25 pg/mL; Pro-BNP 1274 pg/ml, the doctors confirmed: N. had MIS-C syndrome.

This is a multi-organ inflammation in the body, people with this disease will fall into critical condition and may die if not identified and treated early... In Vietnam, only a few cases have been recorded at the National Children's Hospital. Because the number of cases and records is so small, it is difficult to diagnose and can easily be confused with other similar diseases.

With carefulness and concentration in the consultation of difficult cases, N's case was correctly diagnosed. After just over a day of hospitalization, the child was given IVIG, oxygen support, antibiotics in combination with other specific drugs... Gradually, with the efforts of the doctors and nurses, the patient's condition improved, no more fever, no more skin rash, easier breathing, no more conjunctivitis, and he was able to eat and drink. N's critical condition was under control.

Doctors of Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics HospitalRecommendation: The COVID-19 epidemic situation is complicated in Vietnam in general and Nghe An in particular. The number of patients infected with COVID-19 is increasing, especially in young children. Currently, many people with COVID-19 will have no symptoms or mild symptoms and recover on their own. However, a very small percentage of patients have complicated developments, even after recovery. Particularly dangerous are some children with MIS-C syndrome who have been and are being treated at Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital. Therefore, families need to be vigilant and go to the doctor for advice when there are abnormalities during and after COVID-19, thereby avoiding unfortunate consequences that may occur.
