Mystery of the deadly note of the Las Vegas massacre
Investigators have found a piece of paper with calculations of distances and bullet paths from gunman Stephen Paddock's hotel room window to the music festival crowd.
The information was just published by CNN, citing a law enforcement official familiar with the investigation into the shooting. In a previous report, CNN said a piece of paper full of numbers was found in the room.

In addition to the note, police found 23 weapons and ammunition in Paddock's room. The gunman committed suicide after opening fire on the crowd, killing 58 people and injuring about 500 others.
Investigators have been combing through every possible lead to determine the motive of Paddock, a 64-year-old retired accountant who enjoyed gambling in Las Vegas. During the investigation, they discovered that the man had a large amount of weapons and ammunition, including dozens of rifles. However, a week has passed and they have not been able to determine why Paddock committed such a brutal act.
At a recent press conference, Deputy Chief Kevin C. McMahill of the Las Vegas Police Department released more details about the tragedy:
- A Mandalay Bay hotel security guard – who authorities believe drew Paddock's attention to the hallway outside his hotel room – actually went to the 32nd floor to check an alarm triggered by an open door near Paddock's room.
The guard, named Jesus Campos, was shot in the leg while checking the alarm. According to police reports, Paddock did not fire into the crowd below.
The alarm was likely a coincidence. The door had been open for a while, and Paddock didn’t have a key to the room. Either the door was open or it wasn’t closed properly, McMahill said.
- Investigators have found no link between the gunman and terrorism or the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS).
- Authorities believe there are no more gunmen in Paddock's room. However, they are still trying to investigate whether anyone knew about the suspect's plans.
- Authorities also do not believe anyone else used the key to Paddock's room at the Mandalay Bay hotel.
- Investigators have reviewed a large amount of video from various locations, including Mandalay Bay, and have not found anyone else they believe to be a suspect at this time.
- Police do not know what Paddock intended to do with the more than 22kg of explosives they found in his car parked at the hotel.
- Paddock brought 23 guns and ammunition into his hotel room over several days.
- An attorney for Marilou Danley, Paddock's girlfriend, said the woman continues to cooperate with investigators. She will not make any further public statements in the near future.
