The US has just announced a reward of 10 million USD in exchange for information about Muhammad al-Jawlani, the leader of the notorious terrorist group Al-Nusrah in Syria.

"The US State Department's Rewards for Justice Program is offering a reward of up to $10 million for information leading to the identity or location of Muhammad al-Jawlani, the leader of the al-Nusrah Front (ANF) terrorist group," RT news agency quoted the statement as saying.

Muhammad al-Jawlani interviewed by Al Jazeera in September 2016.

This is the first time a reward has been offered for an al-Nusrah leader.

In May 2013, the ANF was listed as a foreign terrorist organization by the United States. Previously, in December 2012, Muhammad al-Jawlani officially announced the goal of establishing an Islamic state in Syria and an Islamic kingdom in the Levant.

Also known as al-Golani, Muhammad al-Jawlani is believed to be from the Golan Heights and was once close to al-Zarqawi, the leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq. He himself has been declared dead in combat more than once, but recently appeared on Al Jazeera with his back to the camera and a black scarf covering his face.

Much of what is known about Jawlani is based on information provided by senior Iraqi intelligence officials on condition of anonymity. According to the source, the character is an Arabic teacher who fought against the US during the 2003 Iraq war and quickly rose through the ranks of al-Qaeda.

In 2006, Jawlani left Iraq after the leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was killed in a US airstrike. He briefly spent time in Lebanon providing logistical support to the al-Qaeda-affiliated Jund al-Sham group before returning to Iraq and being captured by US forces and imprisoned at Camp Bucca.

In 2008, Jawlani was released from Camp Bucca and continued to work for al-Qaeda alongside the AQI leadership, being put in charge of al-Qaeda operations in Mosul. In 2011, al-Baghdadi sent Jawlani to Syria to exploit the power vacuum created by the Syrian civil war and establish a stronghold for AQI.

The al-Nusrah Front, led by Jawlani, was born in January 2012.
