The famous castle in Harry Potter and the Poison Garden

If gardens are often planted with beautiful flowers and trees, making the scene more romantic and poetic, behind the gate of this garden is a deadly danger that always lurks.

The garden looks very normal at first glance with colorful flowers, but it has become a dangerous forbidden area that not everyone can freely enter. Moreover, this is the most dangerous garden in the world!

Behind the old, antique-style black iron gate, a danger sign might stop you if you want to visit it.

Located in the most populous county in England, Northumberland, and within the second largest castle in England: Alnwick is the Poison Garden, home to over 100 of the most poisonous plants on the planet.

The castle was built by the Duke of Northumberland after the Norman occupation, and sits on the picturesque River Aln to help protect the northern border of England from Scottish invasion.

The Duchess's Bold Idea

The garden was initially unremarkable and abandoned, but in 1995 when Jane Percy became the Duchess of Northumberland, she came up with the idea after a trip to an Italian poison garden.

She wanted to sow a little death in the garden, the passion hidden behind the brilliant beauty of the flowers, turning the garden into the most special place in England.

Today it is one of the most famous castles attracting 800,000 tourists every year since it opened in 2004 and became the filming location for the famous Harry Potter movie.

However, the most attractive thing in this castle is the dangerous but also extremely rare poison garden. Dangerous and forbidden plants are also present here such as poppies (used as opium), poisonous Atropa belladonna (or nightshade).

Strychnos nux vomica (contains the nerve toxin strychnine), Coca (used to produce cocaine), hemlock (Greek philosopher Socrates died from the poison of this plant), marijuana, magic mushrooms, belladonna, daffodil bulbs,...

There are extremely poisonous plants that only need one seed to destroy human organs, such as the castor oil plant.

Because of the huge number of tourists, safety is strictly enforced here. All plants are fenced off to prevent people from touching them, and in fact, no one is allowed to touch these dangerous plants.

Because of the rarity of these plants, security is very tight to prevent bad people from stealing the plants. The purpose of the garden is to educate, not to use poison for evil purposes.

Carers also have to follow strict safety procedures, including wearing gloves and specially designed protective gear. The Duchess said:

"The garden's goal is to provide educational value to children. Coming here, they will hear about terrible stories and painful deaths, and be warned about the harmful effects of drug use."

When entering the garden, visitors are constantly warned by loudspeakers or instructions from staff, signs, and are given detailed instruction books on plants as a vivid lesson for everyone to improve their knowledge of prevention.
