Mystery of the banknote printed with the word "sex"

On the 50 rupee note of the Republic of Seychelles, the word "sex" is mysteriously printed behind palm trees.

The Seychelles 50 rupee note is famous worldwide for a rather naughty detail: the word sex is secretly printed on the coin. Sharp-eyed readers will quickly notice that this sensitive word appears hidden among the palm leaves.

Thanks to this detail, the note has increased in value 120 times its real face value. At an auction in Dorset (UK), someone spent 450 USD to buy this note. In fact, its price was less than 4 USD. This note was issued from 1968 to 1973.

The auctioneer, Timothy Medhurst of Duke Auctions, said no one knew who designed the sexually suggestive message on the note. He said it was possible the note was printed by printers before Seychelles gained independence, adding the word “sex” to prevent counterfeiting. But many believe it was a deliberate prank by the printers of the time.

Seychelles, officially the Republic of Seychelles, is an archipelago of 155 islands in the Indian Ocean in Africa. Other neighboring countries and territories include Zanzibar to the west, Mauritius and Reunion to the south, Comoros and Mayotee to the southwest, and the Suvadives of the Maldives to the northwest.

It is also the least populous country in Africa.
