Wu had cervical cancer. After years of chemotherapy, she could no longer bear the pain. Starting in May 2017, Wu began begging her village friend Xu to stab her to death. Wu’s husband, surnamed Wang, also begged Xu to help end his wife’s pain. Wang promised to keep the secret and that his family would not hold Xu legally responsible or seek any compensation.
Finally, on June 15, 2017, Xu agreed to Wu and Wang's request. That same evening, dashcam video showed Xu driving on a dark stretch of road and hitting a woman standing on the road. According toModern ExpressAfter calling the police, Xu returned to the car and reversed it to run over Wu, ensuring her death.
Wu, however, did not die in the accident. She was taken to a hospital in Jurong but refused treatment. On June 17, 2017, Wu asked to go home and died two days later.
On April 3, both the driver, Xu, and her husband, Wang, were charged with attempted murder. The court found that being run over by a truck was not the primary cause of Wu’s death. After years of cancer treatment, Wu’s internal organs had failed and could no longer cope.
Wu's family said they fully understand and sympathize with what Xu did. Wu's son also asked the court to show leniency to Wu and his father.
