After two days of the Thai Binh Provincial People's Court opening the first-instance criminal trial of two former National Assembly deputies Luu Binh Nhuong, Le Thanh Van and their accomplices, on the afternoon of January 8, the representative of the Thai Binh Provincial People's Procuracy exercising the right to prosecute at the trial indicted and proposed punishment for the defendants.
The representative of the Procuracy proposed that the Trial Council sentence defendant Luu Binh Nhuong (former Deputy Head of the Petition Committee of the National Assembly Standing Committee) from 3 years to 3 years and 6 months in prison for the crime of "Extortion of property" and from 10 years to 12 years in prison for the crime of "Taking advantage of position and power to influence others for personal gain", the total penalty for both crimes is from 13 years to 15 years and 6 months in prison.
Defendant Le Thanh Van (former Standing Member of the National Assembly's Finance and Budget Committee) was sentenced to 7 to 9 years in prison for "Taking advantage of position and power to influence others for personal gain".
Defendant Nguyen Van Vuong (former specialist of the Legal Department - Office of the President) was sentenced to 13 to 14 years in prison for the crime of "Taking advantage of position and power to influence others for personal gain".
Defendant Pham Minh Cuong (born in 1986, also known as Cuong “quat”, residing in Thai Thuy district, Thai Binh province) was sentenced to 7 to 8 years in prison for the crime of “Extortion of property”. Combining the sentences of the three previous sentences, the representative of the Procuracy requested the Trial Panel to sentence defendant Cuong to serve the combined sentence according to the provisions of the law.
Defendant Vu Dang Phuong (born in 1982, residing in Thai Thuy district, Thai Binh province, self-employed) was sentenced to 6 to 7 years in prison for the crime of “Extortion of property”. Combining the sentence with the previous sentence, the representative of the Procuracy requested the Trial Council to sentence defendant Phuong to serve the combined sentence according to the provisions of the law.
