Having his right leg amputated due to a doctor's "misdiagnosis", and believing that the hospital's compensation was not satisfactory, a 27-year-old man from Long An sent a petition to the Minister of Health.
Mr. Le Hoang Lam (27 years old, residing in Xuan Hoa 1 hamlet, Loi Binh Nhon commune, Tan An city, Long An) - the person whose right leg was amputated due to misdiagnosis by Dr. Tran Chi Khoi, Ho Chi Minh City Orthopedic and Trauma Hospital, has submitted a petition to Minister of Health Nguyen Thi Kim Tien.

Mr. Le Hoang Lam had his leg amputated due to a "misdiagnosis" by the doctor. |
The 27-year-old man said that Dr. Tran Chi Khoi's examination was subjective, not following the correct procedure, was irresponsible, and made a wrong diagnosis, leading to the amputation of his right leg above the knee, causing him great pain and many times he contemplated suicide.
After the incident, Mr. Lam’s family contacted the hospital several times to ask for an apology and compensation for damages. However, the hospital always avoided them.
Most recently, the hospital relied on the conclusion of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health's Professional Council to conclude that Dr. Khoi "followed the correct procedure" and considered this a difficult case, so it refused to compensate for damages, but only provided partial support.
This man explained that at the time he was transferred to the Ho Chi Minh City Orthopedic Trauma Hospital with an IV bottle still in his hand and his right leg aching, his mother told Dr. Khoi about his condition, the reason for the transfer, and the warning from the lower level doctor of suspected blood vessel blockage.
However, Dr. Khoi only briefly examined the patient, diagnosed a soft tissue injury (sprain), and did not allow him to be hospitalized for monitoring to accurately determine the disease, but sent him home, which led to necrosis and required amputation of his leg.
"The district-level hospital has limited expertise and facilities, but it was able to diagnose my condition almost accurately (popliteal artery occlusion, right knee injury with knee subluxation), so specialist doctor Tran Chi Khoi cannot say that this is a difficult case to diagnose" - Mr. Lam clearly stated in the petition.
Previously, at a meeting with the Ho Chi Minh City Orthopedic Trauma Hospital, the family of patient Le Hoang Lam requested compensation for health damage in the amount of 818 million VND.
However, the hospital did not agree to compensation but only agreed to support 150 million VND for the cost of career conversion and prosthetic legs for this patient.
Mr. Le Hoang Lam requested the Minister of Health to consider directing the Ho Chi Minh City Orthopedic Hospital to seriously acknowledge professional errors in the medical examination and treatment of his case, and at the same time compensate for damages according to the law.
He suggested that if necessary, the Ministry of Health should establish a professional council with full members according to the law, collect all medical records at relevant hospitals and Dr. Khoi's report on the incident, and get opinions from the patient and family to come up with a professional conclusion that is accurate, objective, and in accordance with the law.
Content of the incident: On June 20, Mr. Le Hoang Lam (27 years old, Long An) fell off his motorbike, causing his right leg to swell so much that his family took him to the district hospital for emergency treatment. Here, the doctor examined and diagnosed popliteal artery occlusion (P), right leg knee injury (P) with knee subluxation and prescribed IV fluids, pain relief, support, dislocation reduction, immobilization, anti-swelling, then transferred to the Ho Chi Minh City Orthopedic and Trauma Hospital for treatment. Doctor CK II Tran Chi Khoi examined, ordered an X-ray, concluded that the patient only had a sprain, so he prescribed medicine to take, and scheduled a follow-up visit in 1 week. However, the patient took medicine at home for 3 days but still did not get better, his leg became more and more swollen, purple, and unable to move, so his family rushed him to the Orthopedic Trauma Hospital for re-examination. The doctor on duty assessed this as a dangerous case, and should have been hospitalized for 36-72 hours of observation, and not allowed to go home. After consultation, the patient was transferred to Cho Ray Hospital in the early morning of June 25. Cho Ray Hospital concluded that Mr. Lam's leg had become necrotic due to right popliteal artery blockage and right knee injury, requiring immediate amputation or his life would be in danger. After the incident, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health established a professional council to re-evaluate the entire examination and treatment process. Initial consensus conclusion: The patient's leg was amputated due to the doctor's limited expertise and lack of experience in diagnosing and handling difficult cases, leading to incomplete assessment of the injury and failure to predict the complex progression of the popliteal artery injury. |
