Playing the effeminate, sharp, and mean 'Tu' in 'Under the tree of happiness', Thai Son was often questioned about his sexuality.

Originally a cheo artist, moving into the field of television dramas, Thai Son is gradually asserting himself with the role of "Tu" in the filmUnder the tree of happiness.Although he is a supporting character, "Tu" is loved by a large audience because of his charming expressions, humorous and real-life dialogue, sometimes innocent, sometimes emotional.

Thai Son started out as a cheo artist and moved into the television industry.

"Tu is not my person"

-Even though he is just a supporting character, Tu is sometimes more loved than the main character. How does Thai Son feel about this?

When I read the script, I didn't think Tu would be so loved on screen. I was lucky to work with director Vu Truong Khoa. He also knew that I came from the Hanoi Cheo Theater, so he was always open, communicative, and created favorable conditions for me. Perhaps Khoa also loved this color, so he took good care of Tu. Thanks to that, the character had vitality, leaving an impression on the audience.

-The character Tu has many colors, sometimes singing cheo, sometimes reading poetry, singing literature,... Are the lines that turn into singing and reading poetry originally in the script or are they your improvisation?

The singing scenes were planned in advance in the script, but many were added by the director. Khoa often kept track of the film's rhythm, adding mocking singing and innuendos to make it more lively. There were also scenes that I asked to add, such as the scene where Tu drank with To after To had just been cheated of money by To. Converting the dialogue into Cheo or Van singing depends on the appropriateness of the situation, but whenever possible, I always try to do my best.

- Tu seems to be "tailored" for Thai Son, but how did you create such a vivid character on screen?

Every role has its challenges. Although I have played this type of role in some comedy skits, with Tu, it requires me to focus on carefully studying the character's psychology and actions. Tu is a sharp, mean person, sometimes I feel unapproachable and sour, but he is a warm character.

In real life, I also have friends like Tu. They are very lovely, always bring joy and positive energy. I observe them so that I can act in the most realistic way. When acting, I try to control my acting so as not to overdo it, but to be realistic.

Actor Thai Son plays Tu in the movie "Under the tree of happiness".

"I slapped Nhai a bit painfully but she said "it's okay, you can slap her freely" so I really slapped her".Thai Son humorously shares about the jealousy scene in Under the Tree of Happiness.

- What is your memorable memory when playing the role of Tu?

What I remember most are the two scenes where I had to fight with women. Normally I am quite strong but when I fight I find it a bit difficult. Both times I was beaten. Especially the scene where I fought with Nhai. I slapped Nhai a bit painfully but she said, “It's okay, you can slap me freely"so i slapped him for real (laughs).

There are also many happy memories. Like on set, we acted so good that the crew often had to hold back their laughter. But sometimes people couldn’t hold it in, one time the cameraman laughed so hard that the camera shook.

-With the warm reception from the audience, are you satisfied with Tu?

As for Tu, I was quite pleased when the audience gave many compliments. However, watching it again, I still have many regrets. I am a perfectionist, after finishing a scene and feeling that it was not good enough, I just sat there, feeling regretful, nostalgic, and attached to that performance and line. I secretly thought that I wished I could do it again. It was like performing on stage, the feeling of wanting to do it again but not being able to do it is hard to describe. When I got home, the line was still lingering in my head, unable to sleep. That feeling can only be had when working.

- The audience is curious if Thai Son in real life has any similarities to Tu?

Acting on film is like that, but when I go out, I have to let go of my role. I talk quite softly every day, but that's not true. Tu is not my personality. In real life, I'm a bit quiet, open-minded, but not a talkative person. Sometimes I'm mean, but only when I act or tease people. I'm not as mean as "Tu" (laughs).

Everyone in the film crew, friends and colleagues also teased: ""Only by playing this role can you be yourself, right?" or "You have to act tough outside, right?"I just said that “no, just acting like that, why bother acting outside? They are just jokes and teasing, but from another perspective, they are encouragement and recognition from the audience and colleagues that I have done well, bringing a sense of authenticity and vitality to the character. I really appreciate that.

Artist Thai Son made his mark with the role of Tu in the movie "Under the shade of the happy tree".

-After the role of Tu, what other roles do you plan to play?

As an artist, if there is any opportunity to reach the audience, I want to do it. Personally, I crave to play each role differently from the previous one. To do that, I try to collect and observe everything in life to create my own capital. When I need to play a new character, I use it. Of course, I still have to wait for the right role.

-Audiences commented that Tu has similar colors to the role of Bac Dau in Tao Quan. Has Thai Son ever thought about trying this role?

Last year, I contributed a little to the program.Kitchen Godwith the role of one of the five Thunder Gods. For me, that is luck. The audience loves and supports me, I am very grateful but this luck is too great, I have not dared to think about it.

Poor artist but still have enough to eat with the profession

- Does Thai Son feel sad when the audience knows him a bit late?

I think it all depends on fate. I am happy when the audience calls me by my character name or greets me with lines. That is encouragement, a precious gift after tiring hours. After each role is well received by the audience, I feel more loved, bringing positive energy to my career.

- Currently, Thai Son is a successful Cheo artist with many awards, and now he is a beloved TV actor. What role do you want the audience to know you in more?

As for art, I want to keep and do everything. Which is heavier, which is lighter, it's hard to say. I want the audience to remember me as a Thai Son who always wants to contribute, to get closer to the audience.

Along with performing comedy and participating in television, I still want to make well-prepared singing products, with a style close to folk music. I am looking for musicians to compose songs and record MVs. That has been a long-standing dream, so I just keep doing it without daring to expect much. I think it is better to just keep doing it than to sit in one place and regret it forever.

"After each role is well received by the audience, I feel more loved, bringing positive energy to my career" - Thai Son shared.

- To carry out a music project requires a large amount of capital. Besides performing, do you havedo anything else?

I am just a poor artist but I still make enough money from my job. Honestly, I have done business a few times but I am very unlucky. Whenever I am spontaneous or "spiritual", I do it but it always fails. After "falling" a few times, I realized that to do business, I need to have a more careful and careful plan.

For now, I only focus on doing well in my work revolving around performing and filming, and have no intention of expanding into other fields. Performing artists are thrifty with every little thing all year round. But the important thing is that I am happy because I am doing my job. After days of hard work, the work is completed and the public accepts it, that is joy and happiness for me. Happiness is knowing enough, knowing how to be satisfied with yourself.

- You are quite busy with many projects being nurtured and implemented, so how do you balance work and life?

I often go to work early and come home late, but everyone in the family gradually gets used to it and understands me. My wife supports me a lot. Although we don't work in the same profession, she understands the frequency and reality of the job, so she sympathizes with my hard work. In my free time, I try to spend time with my wife, children and family.

- Thank you for sharing this!
