This marks the first time pediatric heart surgery has been performed using a robot in Belgium. Prior to this, robots had also been used for mitral valve surgery in adults at Saint-Luc Hospital for the past three years.
With the help of the Da Vinci robot, surgical intervention can be reduced to a minimum.
According to a press release from Saint-Luc Hospital on June 15, the use of robots reduces surgical risks, minimizes bleeding, lowers the risk of postoperative infection, improves recovery, and limits the insertion of foreign devices into the body.
The surgeon controls the robot from a keyboard using highly accurate 3D images of the surgical site. Surgical procedures are performed by four robotic arms.
