This is the first time that a heart surgery on a child has been performed using a robot in Belgium. Previously, the robot has also been used in mitral valve surgery on adults at Saint-Luc Hospital for the past 3 years.
With the help of the Da Vinci robot, surgical intervention can be reduced to a minimum.
According to a statement released by Saint-Luc Hospital on June 15, surgical risks will be reduced when using robots, with less bleeding and a lower risk of post-operative infection, better recovery, and fewer foreign devices being inserted into the body.
The surgeon controls the robot from a keyboard using highly accurate 3D images from the surgical site. Surgical procedures are performed by four robotic arms./.
