The key to weight loss may be as simple as eating breakfast later and dinner earlier, new research suggests.


Participants who delayed their first meal of the day by 90 minutes and pushed their last meal of the day up by 90 minutes lost more than twice as much body fat after 10 weeks as the control group, despite not reducing their food intake.

The study, which involved 13 people, appears to confirm the results of similar animal experiments, offering a new option for those looking to lose weight without cutting calories.

People who follow traditional diets, which are based on general food restriction, often suffer from the “rebound” effect, in which they often end up eating more than usual once the diet is over.

The results are “very encouraging,” according to Dr. Jonathan Johnson, University of Surrey, who led the study.

“To some extent, people can still eat the foods they enjoy, but simply changing the timing of their meals can have long-term benefits.”

“It's not a miracle, but it could be an important piece of the puzzle.”

The researchers believe that by putting both breakfast and dinner closer to mid-day, participants could bring their eating times closer to their circadian rhythm, meaning food was metabolized better.

Additionally, weight loss may simply be due to longer overnight fasting periods.

Additionally, although there were no restrictions on what participants could eat, those who changed their mealtimes generally ate less than the control group.

“Reducing body fat reduces the risk of developing obesity and related diseases, so it is important in improving health,” says Dr. Johnston.

The study was published in the Journal of Nutritional Sciences.
