In the 2017 national high school exam, Geography was included for the first time in the form of multiple choice tests. In 50 minutes, candidates must complete 40 multiple choice Geography questions. In which, practical skills questions: Reading the Vietnam Geography Atlas, commenting on charts, analyzing statistical data tables.

This difference requires candidates to make appropriate changes in studying and reviewing Geography.

1. Understand the symbols in the map legend

Students need to grasp the general symbols of topography, minerals, agriculture, industry, forestry and fisheries... on page 3 of the Atlas, because some maps in the Atlas do not have accompanying notes such as the mineral map on page 8, the general industrial map on page 21, agriculture and forestry on pages 18, 19...

2. Understand the structure of Vietnam's geographical map

The structure of the 12th grade Geography textbook and the Atlas are similar. If the 12th grade Geography textbook is structured into 4 basic knowledge units: Natural Geography, Population Geography, Geography of economic sectors, Geography of economic regions, then the Vietnam Geography Atlas is also structured similarly.

In the Vietnam Geography Atlas, it is divided into:

- Part 1: Physical geography (from page 4 to page 14).

- Part 2: Population geography (from page 15 to page 16).

- Part 3: Geography of economic sectors (from page 17 to page 25).

- Part 4: Geography of economic regions (from page 26 to page 30).

This helps to synthesize knowledge more scientifically for both theoretical questions and saves time on the test.

3. Know how to exploit charts in Atlas maps

Normally, each economic sector map has 1 to 2 charts (columns, lines, circles, etc.) next to it, showing the increase or decrease in total output value and area (for agriculture and forestry sectors) of the economic sectors. Students need to know how to exploit the charts in related lessons to avoid having to remember a lot of data in the theoretical part.

4. Read the question carefully and apply it to the Atlas.

All questions that require a description of the distribution of production or require a statement of where the industry is located, why it is there, etc. can be answered using the Atlas map. Questions that require a description of the production development situation or the development process of this or that industry, students can also find some data in the charts in the Atlas.

5. Know how to use enough maps in the Atlas for one question.

Based on the content of the question, whether it is necessary to answer one or many questions, students can determine the necessary map pages in the Atlas based on the table of contents at the end of the Atlas (page 31).

- Multiple choice geography questions only need to use one page of the Atlas to answer such as: Describe the mineral resources in our country? For this question, only using the "Geology-Minerals" map on page 8 is enough.

Question: "Please comment on the population distribution of our country?" - just use the "Population" map on page 15.

- Multiple choice questions that require multiple map pages in the Atlas to answer include:

Multiple choice questions assess the potential (strengths) of an industry, for example: When assessing the potential of the energy industry, students not only use mineral maps to see the potential for developing these industries but also use industrial maps to see the role of this industry in relation to other industries, use river maps to see the potential for hydropower development...

However, the most important thing is that students need to master geography skills, practice test-taking skills and take multiple-choice exams to have good learning results and achieve high results in the upcoming national high school exam.
