Guinness World Records has awarded the record for the "world's oldest living family" with nine surviving siblings to the Italian family of Melis Consolata. Melis, the eldest sister at 105, has eight siblings (three brothers and five sisters), nine children, 24 grandchildren, and 25 great-grandchildren. Four of Melis's eight siblings are over 90 years old, three are over 80, and the youngest is 78. As of June 10th, the combined age of the nine siblings is 818 years and 205 days.
Consolata's family currently lives in Perdasdefogu, a remote town in Ogliastra, nestled in the Mediterranean. The area is known for its high centenarian population, with 370 people currently over 100 years old.
Some people believe that the reason Sardinian residents live so long is because life there is relatively easy. Mayor Mariano Carta asserts that this is not the case, as it is a poor, remote rural area, still lacking electricity. The road leading to the town was only opened 30 years ago. Most residents are uneducated, work as rice farmers, and live in poverty.

Further research into this region has led scientists to conclude that the longevity of its inhabitants is due to a combination of factors: genetics, diet, environment, and a sense of belonging to the community. After reviewing the data, researcher Luca Deiana from Sassari University added that, in addition to genetics, consuming locally grown fruits and vegetables such as pears and plums also contributes to longevity.
The Melis family members believe that, in addition to genetics and environment, a healthy lifestyle, a relaxed attitude, and maintaining inner peace are crucial for a happy and healthy life. Furthermore, a diet rich in noodle soups and vegetables also contributes to longevity. "Sardinia is renowned for its healthy dishes, which are prepared simply, without complicated recipes and with minimal use of spices and sauces."
Speaking to Metro, Craig Glenday, a Guinness World Record representative, stated that a family with so many siblings living to such long lifespans as the Melis family is extremely rare, and they are likely to hold this record for many years to come.
