Dozens of people were arrested at an unauthorised protest site in Moscow after opposition leader Aleksey Navalny called on protesters to leave the authorised area due to problems with setting up a stage and sound system.

RT quoted police sources as saying that around 1,800 people had gathered at the permitted protest site on Sakharova Street, with a sound system in place. The crowd then moved to Tverskaya Street at Navalny’s call.

Moscow police said about 4,500 people took part in an unauthorized demonstration on Tverskaya Street in central Moscow. More than 150 people were taken to police stations for “violating public order,” the capital’s police said in a statement.

Earlier, a Moscow court announced that opposition leader Navalny had been arrested after being convicted of "violating regulations on organizing street protests and rallies". He was detained for 30 days, starting on June 12.
