San Francisco-based startup Memphis Meats is developing a method to produce meat from animal cells without having to raise, breed, or slaughter animals. The company has just received a $17 million investment from billionaires Bill Gates and Richard Branson as well as help from Tesla and SpaceX to commercialize lab-grown meat, International Business Times reported on August 24.
“Instead of creating a meat substitute, they would sell real meat without harming any animals. There would also be no methane emissions, no wasted land, no excessive use of fertilizers, antibiotics or water,” said Steve Jurvetson, a partner at Memphis Meats at DFJ Ventures.
According to Jurvetson, lab-grown meat would cost less to produce than traditional livestock. It would also taste better, provide more nutrients, and be better for the environment.
Memphis Meats can now produce duck, chicken, beef, and eventually all kinds of meat in the lab using the same method. They “grow” living cells in tanks, feeding them oxygen, sugar, and other nutrients. The process uses just 1% of the land and 10% of the water of conventional farming.
Companies like Impossible Foods and Beyond Meat have the same goal as Memphis Meats, but they use plant cells to recreate the taste and texture of meat./.
