Does skipping breakfast cause memory loss?
Nutrition experts will answer the question of whether skipping breakfast causes memory loss below.
According to Dr. Tu Ngu, Vice President and General Secretary of the Vietnam Nutrition Association, the notion that skipping breakfast reduces memory is not entirely accurate.
After a long night without eating, the body can go up to 15 hours without energy replenishment. Therefore, breakfast plays a crucial role in providing calcium, vitamins A and C, zinc, iron, and other essential nutrients, especially for children and teenagers.
However, skipping breakfast can lead to a temporary energy deficit in the brain, resulting in "temporary forgetfulness" due to a lack of glucose. Once replenished, memory will return to normal. This means that breakfast doesn't directly affect long-term memory, but it plays a crucial role in maintaining focus and alertness throughout the day.

What is the right way to have breakfast?
Dr. Tu Ngu advises that the ideal time to eat breakfast is before 8 am. It's best to avoid eating breakfast too late, especially after 10 am, as this shortens the time between meals, affecting digestion and nutrient absorption. Furthermore, maintaining a consistent breakfast schedule will help the digestive system function more efficiently.
Conversely, irregular breakfast habits can overwhelm the stomach, leading to digestive disorders. Glucose consumption also needs to be properly controlled, avoiding overuse to minimize the risk of cell damage from glycation and oxidation by free radicals.
Breakfast options tailored to different groups of people.
Nutrition doesn't have a one-size-fits-all formula. For example, a manual laborer might need an energy-rich breakfast with sticky rice, pho, or fertilized duck eggs. Meanwhile, office workers—who are less active—may only need a light but nutritionally balanced breakfast to avoid excess energy intake.
Each person needs to choose a menu that suits their physical condition, work schedule, and financial situation. Most importantly, maintaining a regular breakfast habit is essential for long-term health protection.
In summary, skipping breakfast doesn't cause long-term memory impairment, but it can affect concentration and work performance. A complete and timely breakfast not only energizes the body but also contributes to overall health. Listen to your body and choose a suitable breakfast for a productive workday.
