Anastasia Mazur, a member of the Teatro Metaphora group, said they initially planned to collect only 100 old washing machines, but ended up collecting 133, many of which were thrown out on the streets like trash.
The collection process took six months. Then the group took apart the washing machines, decorated the drums, and attached lights. As a result, they had 133 beautiful, colorful street lamps.
This unique "light display" is being used for a festival in the town of Câmara de Lobos, Madeira Island, Portugal.
The Teatro Metaphora group says their goal is to encourage people to use materials responsibly and protect the ecological environment.
