Soldiers bring frogs to the border for ethnic people
(Baonghean.vn)- After two consecutive years of failure, in the third year, Production Team No. 2 of Defense Economic Group 4 has successfully built and transferred a commercial frog farming model to a number of ethnic people in two communes of Muong Ai and Muong Tip of Ky Son district.
In 2011, based on the idea of former Team Leader Le Minh Hung, Production Team No. 2 conducted a trial of raising 100 commercial frogs at the team's breeding area in Xup Lau village, Muong Ai commune. However, because they were just starting out, they lacked experience, the food was not suitable, and the frogs brought back to raise often had diseases such as fungus, diarrhea, etc., causing the first batch to be almost completely lost.

In the second year, the team imported 500 juveniles to continue the experimental breeding in the border area. Learning from the previous year, the water source in the breeding tank was disinfected from the beginning and the water was changed regularly. Special attention was also paid to the food to suit each stage of the development of the juveniles as well as the regular feeding method.
Thanks to that, the survival rate and good growth rate of this batch of fry were much higher than the previous batch. With lessons learned from the two previous trials, the team boldly developed a pond with 2,000 to 3,000 fry per batch, and invited local people to visit and learn, combined with technical dissemination.
"Because the local people here have limited education and slow ability to absorb science and technology, I have to make them see with their own eyes before they will listen and follow," shared Senior Lieutenant Vi Tien Hung, deputy captain of production team number 2.

After two consecutive years of failure, the frogs agreed to stay with the villagers in the border area. |
Realizing the effectiveness of the model, by 2015 many households had followed suit, typically the family of Mr. Luong Xuan Phap in Ta Do village, Muong Tip commune and the family of Mr. Cut Pho Duong in Xup Lau village, Muong Ai commune with the initial number of breeding pigs of each household being nearly 1,000 pigs.
After successfully exporting two batches and bringing in a good income, Cut Pho Duong is preparing to import more breeding stock next year. He said that when he first started raising them, he was very scared, but thanks to the staff who regularly visited him, checked the water, and provided him with medicine and techniques, he felt more secure.
In addition to bringing frogs to the border area, production team No. 2 also successfully tested many other models such as: raising catfish; developing hybrid fighting chickens... to encourage people to participate in production to develop the economy, stabilize society and contribute to strengthening the country's borders.
