Father set up electric trap for neighbor, son was electrocuted to death
Due to a conflict with a neighbor, Hai used electric wire to fence around his house, unexpectedly causing the death of his 4-year-old son.
On March 26, the High People's Court in Ho Chi Minh City held an appeal trial and upheld the sentence of Nguyen Minh Hai (26 years old, residing in Tien Giang province) to 12 years in prison for "murder".
According to the first instance verdict, Nguyen Minh Hai and Nguyen Thu Hang (21 years old, residing in Ho Chi Minh City) lived together as husband and wife in Binh An commune, Go Cong Dong district (Tien Giang province). They have a child together named Nguyen Minh Long (4 years old).

Around the beginning of December 2016, Hai had a conflict with Nguyen Minh Tri (29 years old, Hai's neighbor). Because he was afraid that Tri would break into his house and beat him, Hai used a wire directly connected to the power source across the back door of the house so that if a stranger broke in, he would be electrocuted.
On December 27, 2016, Hai used an electrical outlet tied to the headboard of the bed right at the back door of the house, then used an electrical plug and connected it to a wire stretched across the back door of the house 20cm above the ground. The time of plugging in was from 11pm the previous day to 4am the next day.
At around 11pm on December 30, 2016, Hai turned on the power as usual and went to bed. Because he fell asleep, Hai did not turn off the power.
At about 7:30 a.m. on December 31, 2016, Ms. Nguyen Thi Doi (Hai's biological mother) woke up and discovered that Long had been electrocuted to death, so she shouted and reported to the police.
