Russia's Sukhoi Corporation has developed a modernized variant of the Su-30SM fighter, named Su-30SM1, based on lessons learned from the military campaign in Syria, according to National Interest.
Irkut Aircraft Manufacturer (IAPO), the manufacturer of the Su-30SM, announced that it has mass-produced SM1 prototypes for testing. It is likely that this variant will have expanded attack capabilities with new "teeth" such as the small-sized smart bomb KAB-250 and the long-range surface-to-air missile Kh-59MK2.
The KAB-250 weighs 256 kg and plays a similar role to the US GBU-39 SDB. It will replace the KAB-500 and KAB-1500 heavy bombs in the mission of destroying small targets in densely populated areas, minimizing collateral damage like large bombs. The KAB-250 bomb has a modular design, allowing technicians to install a laser seeker or GLONASS global positioning system as required.
The Kh-59MK2 missile helps the Su-30SM1 optimize its long-range ground attack capabilities. The missile is capable of attacking pre-loaded fixed targets, but the manufacturer did not disclose whether this missile can hit warships at sea like the original Kh-59 model. The Kh-59MK2 has a range of 285 km and is equipped with a 320 kg penetrating warhead.

In addition to the enhanced weapons system, the Su-30SM1 will be equipped with a new "brain" which is the electronic system with modern sensors and communications equipment. The IAPO factory did not say the level of upgrade, but it is possible that the Su-30SM1 will have better battlefield data links, along with the ability to detect targets from greater distances.
