Accordingly, answering questions from the press about the mixed public opinion surrounding Mr. Bob Kerry's appointment as chairman of the board of trustees of Fulbright University Vietnam, Foreign Ministry spokesman Le Hai Binh said:
The pain and loss that the Vietnamese people experienced during the war were enormous and could never be compensated. The consequences of war are a problem that the Vietnamese government and people have been constantly trying to solve.
With the peaceful tradition of the Vietnamese people, in the spirit of putting the past behind, overcoming differences, promoting similarities, and looking towards the future, we always strive to cooperate, enhance understanding, and promote the Vietnam - US relationship. A number of US veterans who fought in Vietnam have made many positive contributions in many fields such as diplomacy, culture, education, and overcoming the consequences of war to promote the relationship between the two countries and heal the wounds of war.
With that spirit, we believe that the US side as well as the Fulbright University leadership will make the right decision in line with the development trend of the very good relationship between Vietnam and the US, bringing practical and specific benefits to the people of the two countries.
The appointment of Mr. Bob Kerrey - who participated in the 1969 massacre in Ben Tre - as president of Fulbright University Vietnam (FUV) has caused fierce and controversial debates in public opinion in recent days. During the Vietnam War, Kerrey was a naval captain and participated in one of the bloody massacres in Thanh Phong commune of Ben Tre in 1969 that left many women and children dead. Everything was kept secret because Kerrey and his team's report only said "killed 21 Viet Cong" and destroyed two houses. Everything was only revealed after a series of investigations by the New York Times and the famous CBS television program "60 Minutes II" in 2001. |
